scifi_muses Week 52 Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) – Don McLean
Setting: Hellboy I
It’s cold out, really cold for October. Cigar makes me feel warmer, but I still fight off a shiver every now and again. The stars are out in full force tonight. Liz would love it.
Gonna get in trouble for being out, I’m sure of it. Manning's on the warpath, and Father isn’t as forgiving of me as he used to me. I wish he’d talk to me, like he used to, like before Liz left.
I hear the footsteps behind me; Clay has been sent to fetch me, like a good little dog.
“What you want, Clay?” I blow smoke out of my nose and don’t turn to face him.
“The new guys here, Prof Broom wants you to meet him.” I can hear the apprehension in his voice. “Can you just cooperate, Red?”
“I don’t like newbies.” I stand and brush past him, knocking his shoulder. “Always think they can do things better and with less collateral damage.” I snort a laugh. “Hell, I get the job done, don’t I?” I glare at Clay.
“Of course you do, Red.” I nods. His eye’s still black from last weeks adventure in the sewer. Not my fault he got in my way. Why are the monsters always in the sewer, anyway? Getting’ sick of havin’ ‘em wash my coat ever damn day.
“I been doing this longer than mosta you guys have been alive.” I look back at him over my shoulder. “Don’t that count for somthin’?”
“Sure does, Red.” He nodded at me, not meeting my eyes.
“So why do I need another God damn babysitter?” I turn and face him. “Was this Father’s idea?”
“Yeah, it was.” Clay nodded. “Come on, let’s get you inside before you get in more trouble.” Clay nodded toward the stairs.
“I’m goin’, don’t worry.” I move down the stairs slowly. It’s so beautiful tonight, the stars are so bright. I don’t want to go inside, I like it better out. “What’s the newbie’s name, Clay?” I don’t really care. Just makin’ conversation really. Newbie will probably be dead in a week anyway, they usually are.
“Myers.” Clay replies. “ John Myers.”
“Hmm, sounds like a boy scout name if I ever hear heard one.” I laugh as I pull open the door.
